Hirschl & Adler Galleries was founded in 1952 by Norman S. Hirschl and Abraham M. Adler. In 1967 Stuart P. Feld joined the firm as a partner, and since 1982 has served as its President. Originally housed in the Marguery Hotel on Park Avenue, the gallery moved to a townhouse on East 67th Street in 1958, and in 1977 relocated to a handsome landmark townhouse at 21 East 70th Street. "Established in 1999, Pippy Houldsworth Gallery opened its current space in Heddon Street in 2011. Since its move, the gallery has focused on greater representation of female artists which now accounts for 85% of the roster. As well as presenting the first UK solo exhibitions of many major artists such as Jacqueline de Jong, Mary Kelly, Faith Ringgold and Carrie Mae Weems, it is also well known for its promotion of young artists, often presenting their first one-person exhibitions. Anthony Reynolds organised his first exhibitions in the North West of England in 1969. In 1970 he staged what was then the largest exhibition of contemporary British photography, including over 400 works. From 1976 to 1982 he was Regional Art Officer for the Arts Council of Great Britain, supervising the distribution of grants to artists and artists organisations nationwide.
